Design, Research & Development
Strategic Requirement
Sedgewall were looking to meet current technical challenges in digital audio technology & to enhance their capability in this area. The programme of work undertaken by the Associate, was envisaged to complement the existing expertise within the company & thereby provide an effective means for meeting the current challenges, but also help Sedgewall to explore new market opportunities through the extension of their product range. Specific objectives were to provide audio signal processing expertise & embedded software development in order to produce a cost effective audio enhancement device for deployment within communications applications.
Solution
Through a Knowledge Partner’s East of England (KEEP) partnership with the University of Hertfordshire’s School of Electronic, Communications & Electrical Engineering, Sedgewall Communications accessed the University’s expertise in audio signal processing & embedded software development. Throughout the project the KEEP Associate, Dr Richard Edwards, developed the necessary electronic hardware changes & audio signal processing algorithms in real-time embedded software for deployment in the audio enhancement device.
Benefits to Sedgewall Communications Ltd
Collaboration with the university on the KEEP project:
-
Provided for signal processing & embedded programming expertise
-
Generated possible ideas of future product direction
-
Allowed for future collaboration on projects
-
Enabled the business to complete the project within cost & time constraints
“The partnership with the university allowed us to complete the project on time & within budget. It gave us access to highly skilled persons, who provided us with the necessary expertise & helped us to explore new market opportunities. They have also shown their preparedness for future collaborations and support.”
Dr Abi Abiodun, Engineering Manager, Sedgewall Communications Ltd.

Bespoke Design
Sedgewall have long been regarded as specialists in the design and development of electronic sub systems and modules. We have in house capabilities to take your concept from the drawing board, through to prototype & production, encompassing all manufacturing processes including metalwork, fabrication & testing to ISO 9001, to which Sedgewall have been accredited since 1996.
Our capabilities encompass PCB design (both through - hole and SMT) & prototype build. Our highly qualified engineers & design team, using AutoCAD software are able to offer advice to facilitate smoother & more cost effective production as well as ruggedness & reliability built into the design from our years of experience working within the military market.
Prototype
Sedgewall specialise in medium to low batch assembly. We offer a prototype service, which includes sourcing the required components through our widely experienced purchasing & engineering departments. Our principle is to work with our customers to produce highly specified products. At Sedgewall we recognise how important it is to minimise the time from concept to product & work closely with our customers to achieve this.
Our Aim is to:
- Provide the service required by your design engineering team to ensure the rapid development of the product.
- Capture manufacturing issues to provide pro-active production/process development.
- Create a
completed production pack to ensure efficient future manufacturing. |
